Research Grant Application Guidelines

Submit a typewritten proposal not to exceed five double-space typed pages which includes the following elements:

a) CONCEPTION AND DEFINITION OF THE PROJECT

Explain the basic ideas of questions to be explored and the relationship to your immediate or long range research or scholarship.

b) SIGNIFICANCE OF THE PROJECT

State the relationship of your project to the work of others in the larger context of your field. A literature review should be included, with emphasis on the significant contribution possible from your investigation.

c) PLAN OF WORK AND METHODOLOGY

Provide a brief outline of the plan of work or research design including such topics as: techniques to be used; present state of the investigation; the work to be completed; results to be expected; and the schedule for key steps in the project. Each awardee will submit a three page typed summary of studies and results with an accounting of funds received and spent by March 31, 2009. This summary, or a finished version of it, will be published in the Water Garden Journal, the official IWGS publication. Awardees may also be invited to communicate their findings at the annual symposium of the society in a seminar or poster session.

d) A BUDGET PAGE

This should include brief justification statements. No funds will be granted to reimburse overhead expenses.

  1. It is essential that the text includes enough detail about the ideas, methods, and objectives of the project to enable reviewers to assess quality, significance, and feasibility. A simple statement of intent or need is insufficient evidence that a project merits support.
  2. In addition to the proposal, submit a complete curriculum vitae (CV) including a list of previous publications and descriptions of past grant and professional activities.
  3. Have one letter of recommendation sent to the Research Committee by February 15, 2008. The individual(s) providing recommendations should be familiar with your record of scholarship and knowledge about the proposed project or area of research.
  4. Submit four copies of the completed application (proposal and CV) to the address below.
  5. Applicants may submit applications electronically to the Chairman of the Research Awards Committee at:

REVIEW PROCESS

  1. Completed application packages (proposal, CV, letters) must be filed with the Research Committee by February 15, 2008.
  2. Applicants are advised that the review committee, drawn from the disciplines across the plant sciences, will appreciate proposals addressed to an audience of professionals who are interested but not necessarily familiar with the particular terminology or methods of your specialized field (dumb it down!).
  3. Applications will be judged using the following criteria:
    1. the quality or the promise of the applicant's work and likelihood the project will be completed;
    2. the significance of the contribution to the advancement of applied (practical) knowledge in the field of aquatic plants; and
    3. the conception, definition, and description of the proposed project.
  4. Awards will be announced by March 30, 2008.
  5. All publications and presentations resulting from work conducted under the sponsorship of these fellowships must acknowledge the International Waterlily and Water Gardening Society.
